Aging In Place Connections

About the S.A.F.E.™ Assessment

A comprehensive, evidence-based methodology for evaluating home safety and aging-in-place readiness across four critical pillars.

What is S.A.F.E.™?

The S.A.F.E.™ Assessment is a proprietary home evaluation framework developed by Aging In Place Connections. It's informed by professional aging-in-place best practices, industry standards, and research from organizations like the National Institute on Aging, AARP, and home safety specialists.

Unlike generic checklists, the S.A.F.E.™ methodology takes a holistic approach by evaluating four interconnected pillars that determine whether a loved one can safely and happily remain in their home.

The Four Pillars of S.A.F.E.™

Safety

Physical hazards that could cause falls, injuries, or emergencies. This includes tripping hazards, bathroom safety, lighting, stairs, emergency preparedness, and medication management. Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors, making this pillar critical.

Example Questions: Are there grab bars in the bathroom? Is lighting adequate throughout the home? Are medications organized and taken correctly?

Accessibility

The ability to move freely and perform daily activities independently. This covers mobility aids, doorway widths, step-free entrances, kitchen/bathroom accessibility, and adaptive equipment. Reduced mobility shouldn't mean loss of independence.

Example Questions: Can they navigate stairs safely? Are doorways wide enough for walkers or wheelchairs? Can they reach kitchen items easily?

Familiarity

Cognitive function and ability to maintain routines safely. This includes memory, confusion, wandering risks, appliance safety, and awareness of surroundings. Cognitive decline can make even a familiar home dangerous without proper safeguards.

Example Questions: Do they forget to turn off appliances? Do they get confused or disoriented at home? Are they at risk of wandering?

Engagement

Social connection, mental stimulation, and quality of life. This addresses isolation, hobbies, transportation, communication with family, and emotional well-being. Physical safety means nothing if someone is lonely, depressed, or disconnected from life.

Example Questions: Do they have regular social interaction? Can they pursue hobbies and interests? Do they have reliable transportation?
